S is for Shareese Renée Ballard (Res) & (S)istas in the Pit

Shareese Renée Ballard or rather Res is an American singer from Philadelphia, PA who's musical style is a mix of R&B, Soul and Indie Rock. Her debut album titled How I Do was released in 2001 that turned out hits like "They Say Vision" (One of my personal favorites) and "Golden Boys". The single "They Say Vision" reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Dance Chart. Although Res had made a mark in the music scene she didn't quite make a huge impact and as a result in 2003 the record label she was signed to (MCA Records) was phased out by MCA, Inc. and was turned into Geffen Records, a few years later she left the label. Res went on to record songs for two major movies one a cover of Jefferson Starship's song "Miracles" for Maid in Manhattan and "To Empower" for Akeelah and the Bee.
She released her second album titled "Black.Girls.Rock" in 2009 exclusively through iTunes, which had songs on it that were unreleased on her last album with Geffen records. After this she joined artist Talib Kweli and they formed the group Idle Warship and went on tour together in the US in December of 2011 to January 2012. They also completed a European tour and performed sold out shows. In 2010 the duo released a mixtape titled Party Robots and a year later released their debut album titled "Habits of the Heart".
Currently Res is working on a documentary that will give fans an insider into the struggles she went through as an artist beginning her career in the music industry and also what her life is like right now. Res continues to perform shows and is still active with Talib Kweli as Idle Warship. She is currently working on a new album that is set to be released in 2015 titled RESET. I can't wait!

Sistas in the Pit is an American band from Oakland,CA who's sound is a mix of rock fused with blues, jazz, soul, funk and punk; which the band describes as "sexy rock". The band originally began as a four woman group but it appears as if Anita Lofton is no longer a part of the band according to their Facebook page and official band website the band became a trio and is now comprised of founding member and drummer ieela Grant, Kofy Brown on bass, Shelley Doty who plays guitar and provides the vocals; together the band is one kick ass act! The band released their first album "The Missing Piece" in 2005 and "Sistas in the Pit- Live 2010".
The band has played alongside many big named acts such as Iggy Pop, Bad Brains, and Macy Gray just to name a few. In 2011 the band released a single for the It Gets Better Project titled "It Gets Better" to address the issues that LGBTQ youth face. As of 2011 the band was playing shows and working on their third album; however I have not heard any other news on the band in regards to them releasing another album. The band is scheduled to play a show at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, CA on June 4th. It would be awesome to see these ladies play live and I hope that one day soon I will get the chance to do so.  Check them out in all their awesomeness below and check back with their social media pages for updates.
