This year I decided to blog about the influence African American artists and musicians had on starting Alternative, Rock and even Heavy Metal music. Throughout the years, this piece of history has either been omitted or it has been overlooked by people who didn't want to give credit where credit was rightfully due. I will also be introducing artists and musicians who are not well known but who are very much keeping the presence of Black people in these genres of music. I also wanted to do this to reconnect with my root; also address and bring light to the racism that black people have faced and continue to face when they embrace rock, alternative and heavy metal music. I've experienced racism personally for my love of these genres of music and on the flip side of this experienced ridicule by black people who didn't know the history of the music and chalked it up as "white people's music" (If only they knew). Through this year's blog, I hope that if there are kids out there facing these same issues, they will find this blog and know that they are not alone and that there are others like them and that they don't have to ashamed for who they are and what they like. They don't have to fit into the box that has been set for them. I enjoy living outside the box and encourage them to do the same. I also wanted to learn about new artists who are on the scene that even I was not aware of and present these artists to my readers so that they might also appreciate the music and it's origins.
So without further ado, let's get this going!
