Zoe Saldana has become one of my favorite actresses, I loved her in Center Stage, Drumline, Guess Who, Star Trek, Avatar and Columbiana. Although recently, I have had major issues with Zoe, I can still say that I admire her. I have issues with her because of choice to portray Nina Simone; I just feel like when you choose someone to portray a historical figure you should get an actress/actor who resembles that figure, it is important in this case because of Nina Simone's legacy and what it is she stood for. While I have no doubt that Zoe Saldana will do great acting in the biopic portraying Simone, it's just that all throughout history Black women have had their image tarnished, we have been taught to think that a certain type of woman(white women) are the only women who can be beautiful and if we want to be beautiful we must look like white women and I feel like Zoe doesn't quite understand the issue at hand...but yet and still I still admire Saldana because of her ability to play a wide range of characters.
I also love the fact that Zoe is proud of her heritage and that she is very strong-willed and not afraid to voice her opinion's on things that matter to her.
Zoe Saldana in her own words:
" I never like to get political, but when you have the ability, through your media, to influence a large mass of people, I would want to be a part of the evolving cycle of progress vs. keeping things the way that they are."
"I'm a sci-fi girl. If I can have anything in life, I'd want tons of great science-fiction movies and stories. It's so progressive, beautiful, and imaginative."
" When I act, a part of me goes into the character I am playing."
